The potential impact of biased artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the public and private sectors is to be examined by the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee.

Announcing the inquiry, the committee said MPs will examine the potential impacts of biased algorithms in the public and private sectors due to “a lack of transparency on how AI is applied and how automated decisions can be challenged will also be investigated".

A white paper from the government is expected later this year, the committee said in a statement released on 20 October, hours before Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned as leader of the Conservative Party. The committee said it would examine the white paper as part of the inquiry.

The inquiry will investigate how risks that the public face from the improper use of AI is to be addressed, as well as the methods the government can use to ensure the ethical and responsible use of AI. The committee said it was seeking evidence of current AI governance and how existing UK government plans compare to those of other countries.
