The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched a toolkit for running analytics on personal data.
It takes organisations through some of the key data protection points they need to think about from the outset of any planned project, providing questions to ask and identifying some of the central risks.
The questions cover four themes: lawfulness, accountability and governance, data protection principles and data subject rights.
The toolkit produces a short report with tailored advice for a project, but the ICO said this does not guarantee it will comply with data protection law, and that it is also necessary for users to seek the advice of their organisation’s data protection officer (DPO).
“It is vital that data protection is built in from the start when using data analytics to process personal data,” the ICO said. “This is not only the law but it’s a crucial step to gaining public trust and confident in the technology and how your organisation is using people’s data.”
