The demands of cyber security are becoming even more complex for local authorities.

They have to deal with multiple legacy systems, the gradual move to cloud, a rising number of cyber threats – intensified by the increasing use of AI – and the continual squeeze on their budgets.

In addition, the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill – scheduled to go to Parliament next year – will introduce new elements of expectation and influence the approach to strengthening security.

UKAuthority, in collaboration with SCC, is bringing together a group of experts from local government to discuss the issues, with the promise of providing a range of insights on how councils can cope with the new complexities of cyber resilience.

Taking part will be: Matt Wilton, deputy chief executive of Newcastle City Council; Geoff Connell, director of digital services at Norfolk County Council and chair of the Cyber Technical Advisory Group, Jenny McEneaney, senior improvement policy adviser for cyber, digital and technology at the Local Government Association; Mark Arctinis, principle cyber security consultant at SCC; and UKAuthority publisher Helen Olsen Bedford.

Influence the discussion

The event will take place online at 11.00 am on Wednesday 9 October, with the audience able to influence the discussion with their own comments and questions. You can sign up to log in for the event here.

It will be followed by an announcement on the results of a UKAuthority survey of local authority professionals on the issues. This is still open for contributions and can be found here.

It all amounts to a significant opportunity to broaden your understanding of how councils can deal with the changing complexities in cyber security.
