Highways England has awarded Siemens Mobility contracts to deploy a new collaborative traffic management solution (CTM) in the South-East and Yorkshire and North-East.
The move follows an initial programme in the South-East and includes the upgrade of its existing solution with a new user interface to provide access to a new suite of tools to manage traffic signals. This will link to Siemens’ urban traffic control (UTC) system.
Over 260 traffic signal sites will be controlled and monitored by the system by the start of next year.
The company said it will provide real time adaptive traffic control using SCOOT (split, cycle, offset optimisation technique) for many of the junctions around Highways England regions. It collects data from on-street detectors and feeds into the junction controls to optimise the flow of traffic.
The upgrade will also include the introduction of traffic, fault, asset and strategy management tools for the traffic management team to identify and deal with faults quickly, and to manage congestion hotspots.
The system is being provided as a software-as-a-service.
Andrew Wilson, Highways England team leader for intelligent traffic systems in the South-East, said: “We look forward to working with Siemens Mobility in a collaborative environment to further drive our ability to integrate with our external partners and drive for better value and service to our customers.”
