Health Data Research (HDR) UK has begun the first phase of its development of a service to support the ethical and safe use of data analytics in healthcare.
The non-profit organisation, which is supported by a number of public authorities and charities, has launched the procurement process for a minimum viable product (MVP) of the HDR Innovation Gateway.
It said this will provide a common access point to data for industry, researchers and innovators and help to boost health data science in the UK.
The MVP will consist of two parts. The Gateway Portal will be designed to help users find relevant datasets and explore associated metadata – much of which is currently difficult to find and access – and support requests for access to datasets.
This will involve syndicated authentication of the data and interoperability to support mapping between datasets, and the use of de-identification and encryption software.
The Gateway will be built on existing infrastructure and best practice, with plans for the later stages of development to include technology to enable the re-use of mapping and codifying interoperability between datasets.
Designer search
HDR UK is currently seeking a supplier to design and develop the portal. According to the procurement notice, it has carried out a design and dialogue process with inputs from potential users and suppliers, and patients, the public and charities.
The second part will be a metadata catalogue to help manage the datasets, for which HDR UK is looking to procure a web hosted backend application.
It has made £330,000 available for the first phase of the development as part of its Digital Innovation Hub Programme, which is funded by UK Research and Innovation’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund as part of the Data to Early Diagnosis and Precision Medicine Challenge.
