The value of data is becoming embedded in the thinking of the public sector, especially as it moves towards a new era in which artificial intelligence will be a crucial element.
But the increasing volume of the asset and rapid evolution of techniques for using it is creating a challenge for many organisations.
They need to strengthen their understanding of how to pull together and analyse data from an increasing array or sources, and how it can be used within the application of AI, while at the same time ensuring they stay within the regulatory limits and maintain high ethical standards.
Several of the related issues will come under the spotlight at UKAuthority’s AI & Data4Good 2022 online conference, sponsored by Alteryx, Agilisys and Hitachi Solutions and due to take place on 12-14 October.
It will focus on the continuing evolution of the use of data assets, the development of the skills and tools needed, the scope for innovation, and measures to build public trust in the proper use of personal information.
Innovation outlook
There will be contributions on innovative approaches to the use of data from speakers including Peter Jackson of Dorset Council on its dashboard on how national developments affect its residents, and Bradley Coupar of Sutton Council on its use of data in smart places initiatives, and Dr Sam Prodger from the Royal National Lifeboat Institute on using data to support its volunteers.
These will be accompanied by presentations on the latest on information governance from Dr Susheel Varma of the Information Commissioner’s Office – looking at data privacy and protection - and Dawn Monaghan of NHS England on how it applies to health and social care.
Other speakers will include Tom Smith, chief data officer at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Jay Saggar of the London Office of Technology and Innovation, and Jonathan Dowey of Avon and Somerset Police.
It amounts to diverse and probing agenda that will provide a range of valuable insights into how to approach the evolution of public sector data.
