Harnessing data and tech for smart cities

15/06/23

Smart cities and rural places are evolving quickly as local authorities work to harness real time data and connectivity to improve the lives of their citizens.

From smart mobility and travel systems to smart bins, air quality and road sensors, foundations are being laid across the country involving 5G, LoRaWAN and public Wi-Fi. Councils are also building on the digital confidence gained across communities during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Such efforts are producing a range of valuable perspectives, several of which will be presented next week at UKAuthority's virtual conference, Smart Places and Communities 2023. It provides an opportunity to explore key issues and focus on how best can we harness the right technology and data in a secure way for smarter cities, places and communities.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) also recently published a guide for local authorities to protect against cyber threats in connected places and smart cities initiatives, which will be discussed by Andrew Elliott deputy director for cyber security for DSIT at the event.

Smart Places and Communities 2023 is online taking place on the 21, 22 and 23 June at 11am each morning for 90 minutes of shared learning. It involves a range of speakers from the DSIT, the London Office of Technology and Innovation (LOTI), the Greater London Authority and other bodies in local government.
