GeoPlace has launched a new website to help the public understand more about the road network in England and Wales.
Named findmystreet, it has been built by the organisation – which brings together address data managed by local authorities – and funded by the Local Government Association (LGA).
Its purpose is to support the Deregulation Act (2015), protecting public rights of way from being extinguished. The public will be able to use it to report any missing rights of way to relevant highway authorities.
It should also help reduce the burden on local highway authorities creating a list of streets under the Highways Act 1980.
GeoPlace said it makes local authority street management data available to the general public for the first time and should help people find out where a street is, its official name in the National Street Gazetteer (NSG) and who is responsible for its maintenance.

Nick Chapallaz, managing director of GeoPlace said: "This new service has been funded by the LGA and provides easy, free access to view a wealth of authoritative and up-to-date information about street and road data in England and Wales.
“The details in the National Street Gazetteer are essential data, already used by hundreds of businesses, and we hope this new public view of the NSG will stimulate interest from a wide cross-section of people interested in the streets in their area."
The NSG is the most authoritative source of information about streets in England and Wales. Compiled by the combination of the 173 local highway authority Local Street Gazetteers (LSG), it is created to coordinate works on the street and help minimise the number of times they are dug up by utility companies, companies with the statutory right to carry out works and highway authorities.
