The Government Digital Service (GDS) has said it is planning to update the Data Ethics Framework for the public sector.
Its data ethics team said the move reflects the need to take account of significant changes since the last version of the framework was published in 2020, especially with the rapid development of AI.
“We want to make sure the framework reflects these changes, remains relevant and practical, and continues to support public trust in government’s use of data and data driven technologies,” it said.
“After engaging with teams across government, we found that the volume and variety of guidance, and lack of clear signposting make it difficult for people to find the right resources and know which ones to follow for their projects.”
Survey and hub
The team has also launched a short online survey for public servants and researchers to provide their views, and created a Guidance Hub to help public sector teams find the right resources.
It said the new version of the framework will provide the latest guidance, merging existing documents where possible, and be aligned with the latest advice and best practice. It will also be aimed at providing clearer guidance on emerging issues such as AI.
The framework – for public sector teams to use data appropriately in planning, implementing and evaluating new policies and services – was first published in 2016 and updated in 2018 and 2020.
