The Government Digital Service (GDS) has taken on Deloitte to help develop a mobile app for digital identity checks for government services.

It has agreed on a £4.8 million contract with the consultancy as part of its project to provide a ‘one stop’ app for users to access services through a smartphone.

The app will be integrated with the planned single sign-on for government services as part of the GDS effort to replace the ill fated Verify digital identity service.

According to the contract notice for the Deloitte deal, the company will provide professional services for the digital identity unit in GDS, supporting discovery research on needs and value of the app and in building up its internal engineering capability in app development.

The contract is due to run until February 2024.

Deployment target

The plans were originally laid out by Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Steve Barclay MP last October, with an original forecast that the app should be ready for its first deployment by the end of this year.

It is currently unclear how many government services would use it, but GDS is working with other departments to bring as many as possible onboard.
