The Covid-19 pandemic has changed perspectives on what makes smart places, and the digital systems that underpin them.
The need for social distancing and an expectation of new patterns of work and travelling is forcing local, regional and national authorities to think afresh about how people will live, work and move about their cities and towns.
This will require new thinking about how we use space, the integration of different forms of transport and how this relates to issues such as public health and environmental sustainability.
It is going to require new digital solutions, harnessing the internet of things and new ways of exploiting data, aimed at making our cities and places smarter, more inclusive and more responsive to the needs of citizens and business.
This forms the backdrop to this week’s Smart Places, Smart Cities 2021 conference, to be staged online by UKAuthority between 11.00-12.30 on Wednesday and Thursday, 23 and 24 June.
A series of speakers at the cutting edge of smart place initiatives will address issues such as future proofing cities, the underlying connectivity, new approaches to data and harnessing the potential of the IoT.
