European standards organisation ETSI has produced a set of technical recommendations for the use of IoT devices in emergency communications.
They come as part of a broader report on the subject, titled ETSI TR 103 582, compiled in response to the growing use of IoT technologies in services relevant to emergency situations.
It includes two sets of recommendations, for existing and new domains, with the former broken down into emergency calling, mission critical communications and public warning systems. The new domain is for automated emergency responses, where IoT devices can act after receiving a trigger to prevent hazardous situations.
Within each section there are recommendations on usage and maintenance, interoperability, networks and connectivity, data exchange at service and application level, and security.
Michelle Wetterwald, a member of ETSI’s EMTEL committee, said: “The ETSI report prepares the requirements for communications involving IoT devices in all types of emergency situations.
“It also leverages from benefits of IoT with data gathering without human interaction, objectivity of IoT data, fast and fail safe information sharing, translation of human languages not required, real time data transmission and operation in dangerous environments.”
