Consultancy and tech giant adds digital transformation element to IT services in extension of existing contract

The Environment Agency has extended its deal with Capgemini for IT services by 18 months until August 2018.

The contract will be managed through the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ (Defra) UnITy programme, its framework for IT procurement.

The company said the deal, which builds on that agreed in 2009, will involve it continuing to provide an IT service, and allow the Environment Agency to carry out due diligence as part of its tendering process in a move to a multi-sourced supply of IT services.

This reflects Defra’s long term plan to replace its major contracts with Capgemini and IBM with a number of smaller deals.

It will also contribute to the Defra’s digital transformation programme, with an emphasis on reducing duplication and costs, and providing new services for end users.

Wider brief

Christine Hodgson, Capgemini’s UK chair, said the digital transformation element could allow the company to take on a wider brief and explore new solutions.

Chris Howes, deputy chief technology officer for Defra, said: “This represents an excellent deal for us both. It will enable a smooth transition of services across Defra and the Environment Agency, and provide us with a greater level of resilience, business continuity and stability, essential for our business, our teams and our customers.”
