East Riding of Yorkshire Council has extended its free public access Wi-Fi to more towns in the district.

The service has provided free connectivity since its launch in January for 60,000 users in Beverley, Bridlington, Goole, Hedon, Hornsea, Howden, Pocklington, and Withernsea.

The council said that, supported by funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, it will now be available in central areas of Cottingham, Driffield, Hessle, and Snaith, and that coverage in Bridlington has been expanded into parts of the old town.

It said the service has proven to be a valuable asset for local businesses, enabling market traders to take card payments more quickly and efficiently, while improving internet access for cafés and pubs with outdoor seating. It has also been popular with visitors.

Strong uptake

Cllr David Tucker, deputy leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We’re thrilled with the strong uptake of East Riding’s free public access Wi-Fi. This is an invaluable resource for local businesses, market traders, residents, and visitors. The next phase of the project will bring these benefits to even more towns across the East Riding.”

The service has been supplied by local network operator KCOM.
