The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is testing a new service for online applications for personal independence payments (PIPs).
Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work Tom Pursglove MP referred to the project in response to a parliamentary question from Sir Stephen Timms MP about digital applications.
He said the DWP’s Health Transformation Programme includes a digital PIP service, and that a small scale test is underway involving a limited number of claims that will gradually be increased.
This follows the introduction of a digital version of the PIP2 health questionnaire, which is now offered to the majority of claimants.

“The full online apply service will offer claimants the option to claim PIP online, including the ability to save and resume and to upload medical evidence,” Pursglove said.
“The programme will be developing the new PIP service carefully and incrementally, designing it around the needs of claimants, making it quicker, simpler and more transparent.”
Last year DWP awarded Atos IT Services a £31 million contract for IT managed services to support the provision of PIPs.
