The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has launched an online service to enable lorry, van, bus and coach drivers to pay roadside fines immediately.
Pay a DVSA roadside fine has gone live on GOV.UK, providing an alternative to chip and PIN payments.
DVSA examiners have the power to carry out spot checks on commercial vehicle drivers in England, Scotland and Wales and can impose a fixed penalty fine for an offence.
Under the new service, the examiner asks the driver for an email address or mobile phone number for themselves or a nominated payer. That person then receives a message with a DVSA payment code and a link to pay the fine on GOV.UK. They then enter debit or credit card details and receive a confirmation by email or text.
In addition, the DVSA examiner will be told if the fine has been paid. If they had immobilised the vehicle they can release it when any other outstanding issues have been resolved.
DVSA head of enforcement policy Gordon MacDonald said: “This new app will allow for easier, more efficient payment of fines at the roadside, freeing up our staff to focus on the most dangerous rogue operators on Britain’s roads.”
The rules for when drivers can be fined, amounts and deadlines for payments are not changing.
