The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has agreed on a new two-year contract with IT infrastructure services provider Kyndryl.

Under an agreement reached in August and valued at £6.45 million, the agency will use the company’s zCloud managed service to maintain business continuity and support its modernisation programme.

This follows from an earlier agreement between DVLA and IBM, from which Kyndryl broke away in 2021.

The company said the new contract will enable the agency to “securely pivot in line with future technology advances”.

Its public sector lead for UK and Ireland, Paul Liptrot, said that zCloud is effectively a private cloud mainframe platform run from its data centres in Corsham and Portsmouth, and provides the scope for supporting a hybrid cloud environment.

Collaboration for transformation

The company’s president for the region, John Chambers, said: “By collaborating to achieve successful business transformation and continuity, we’re proud to help the DVLA with its goals of becoming a dynamic digital organisation.”

Kyndryl has also won significant deals this year with HM Revenue and Customs – for mainframe services over 15 months valued at £4.5 million – and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to supports its core network infrastructure, for £4.4 million over 14 months.
