The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has launched a new service to add a driving licence check code to a mobile phone.
It uses a QR code – the collection of black and white squares that can store data on a smartphone – that includes information on driving categories and entitlements, and any restrictions, endorsements or qualifications.
This enables the driver to share their driving record with a company or employer.
It has taken the existing mechanism to view and share driving licence information further by adding the option to download the QR code with the relevant information onto an iPhone or Android device. It lasts for 21 days and can only be used once.
The new service has gone into beta after being tested with users including individual motorists, lorry and bus drivers, transport managers and back office staff. It also makes use of the GOV.UK Verify platform to enable users to prove their identity.
The DVLA is now monitoring the usage and any feedback on the service.
