Business plan includes intent to support supply of information to EU Tachonet Network

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is planning to launch a new online service for the issuing of tachgraph cards by the end of this year.

It is aiming to produce the service as part of a ‘Hub for digital motoring’ that is among the plans highlighted in its newly published Business Plan for 2018-19.

The document says the move responds to public demand, with 90% of tachograph users having requested an online channel, and that it will support the move to supply information to the EU’s Tachonet Network. This acts as a hub from information from tachographs, which monitor the driving times of professional drivers and help to enforce rest periods.

DVLA issues around 276,00 tacho cards each year.

It says it plans to deliver the new web based service and others by the end of the year as the first phase of its driver services transformation.

New website

Other steps will involve developing a new sales website for personalised vehicle registrations – which bring in £113 million a year – and encouraging more usage of its digital service for paying road tax.

The steps will be supported by elements of DVLA’s IT Strategy, which was published in June of last year, that involves taking the management of its estate back in-house, moving away from a large scale IT contract, building new platforms and cancelling the renewal of software licences that do not provide value.

The plan adds that the introduction of new online services has helped the agency to reduce its intermediary costs by more than £10 million.
