Agency highlights areas in which it aims to build capability from research project
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has put out a call for support in beefing up the data science capabilities across defence and security.
It has announced a research project aimed at developing data science techniques to improve understanding and situational awareness from all available information, and pointed to the ambition of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to develop new approaches to sorting, managing, storing, fusing and exploiting data.
Dstl, an executive agency of the MoD, said it also wants to understand potential crossovers from other areas with similar technical challenges, such as the legal, healthcare and finance sectors.
It has asked suppliers to provide details of their technologies and the current readiness level, along with an indication of the expected maturity within two years with realistic levels of funding.
The organisation has highlighted a number of areas in which it wants to explore the options, including information science, the fusion and understanding of information, predictive analysis, hypothesis generation and evaluation, and people data analytics.
Dstl emphasised that it is not yet launching a procurement process, simply requesting information, and regards this as part of assessing a research project to run over a number of years.
