Dorset Care Record adopts GP Connect standards

09/03/21

The Dorset Care Record (DCR) for health and social care has changed its approach for receiving GP data.

It has switched from using the Medical Interoperability Gateway to GP Connect standards, which facilitate the provision of APIs with GP systems.

The DCR team said the move should support better clinical care by opening up information and data held within the IT systems of practices.

Its senior responsible officer Peter Gill said: “The system will save time for clinicians, and provide better, more convenient care for patients.

“The service makes patient medical information available to all appropriate clinicians when and where they need it to support direct patient care, leading to improvements in both care and outcomes.”

It expects to obtain other benefits including more detailed notes and readings, the exchange of a broader level of information and making it easier to add new information to the record.

NHS and council usage

The DCR is used by a number of NHS organisations in the county along with Dorset County Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council.

The adoption of the GP Connect standard – developed by NHS Digital to make data from clinical systems available in a standard form is part of the commitment as part of the DCR role with the Wessex Care Records. This includes continually reviewing and implementing the latest interoperability standards.

The DCR team said it is now looking to support the exchange of information on factors such as medications between multiple partners in real time.
