The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is beginning to work on a set of data specifications to be used in planning applications.

It said this is aimed at making the process for local authorities smoother, faster and more efficient.

Its Digital Planning team said it is going to look into where specifications are required and define them clearly, taking into account how the data will be used by the planning community.

The team is already working on developing a starter data specification and plans to set up a working group and share regular updates on a GitHub page.

It has called on members of the planning community to apply to join the group through the page.

“Developing robust, effective data specifications will ensure that what is submitted is consistent and compatible with the different digital systems used by local planning authorities and the new tools and services, such as digital site notices, which are currently being developed to transform the system,” the Digital Planning team said.
