Digital Health and Care Wales has pulled together the four national programmes for electronic prescriptions in healthcare into the new Digital Medicines Transformation Portfolio.
The move follows an independent review into electronic prescribing in Wales, and a statement last year by Minister for Health and Social Services Eluned Morgan outlining the ambition for a comprehensive digital medicines plan.
The new portfolio will co-ordinate four connected areas of work, for the Primary Care Electronic Prescription Service, the Secondary Care Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration, Patient Access (which uses the NHS Wales App to share and collect medicines information, order repeat prescriptions and nominate a person’s pharmacy of choice), and the Shared Medicines Record.
Morgan said: “We want to make sure services deliver the best outcomes for citizens, and are designed around how citizens and service providers want to use and manage those services… This programme will transform prescribing in Wales, supported by a digital platform."
Professor Hamish Laing, the portfolio’s senior responsible owner, has made a short explanatory video.
