The Department for Transport (DfT) is beginning the further development of its Collision Reporting and Sharing (CRASH) IT platform for recording road accidents.
It has identified a need to integrate CRASH, provided by Civica Digital, with other key IT systems operated by police forces. These include Niche and Athena for intelligence and case management and PentiP for penalty notices.
The DfT has published a procurement notice saying it needs support from an individual or organisation that has a knowledge of CRASH, and the needs of police forces, but no duty to Civica.
The platform works on the Microsoft Azure cloud, includes a mobile reporting function and enables police officers to capture information on collisions at the roadside using Ordnance Survey mapping data. In turn, this enables them to share collision data with the DfT, Highways England, police and local authorities in plans to improve the safety of road networks.
It is currently used by about 20 police forces in England and Wales.
The DfT is aiming to complete the integration by the end of this year.
