The Department for Transport (DfT) is planning to set up an IT system to support the operation of the planned zero emissions vehicle (ZEV) mandate.
It has agreed on a two-year, £1.2 million contract with digital and data technology company Informed Solutions for the development of a database of relevant vehicle records.
The ZEV mandate would require a steady increase in the proportion of UK car sales by brand from 22% in 2024 to 80% in 2030. This would contribute to the wider plan to end the sale of all petrol and diesel cars and vans in the UK by 2030, and for all to be fully zero emission at the exhaust by 2035.
The proposal for the mandate has been subject to a consultation, the feedback from which is currently being analysed by the DfT.
Simple requirement
The department has meanwhile pushed on with the procurement of an IT system, which the contract award notice describes as relatively simple, comprising a database and front end to enable access to the records. Participants will need to be able to access and amend their records securely, with the body responsible for administering the regulation able to approve or deny any changes.
The system will also make it possible to calculate compliance with the scheme and record any relevant activities. It will be based on an existing service for CO2 data and is scheduled for delivery by the second quarter of next year.
