The Department for Education (DfE) has created a new role of head of digital to work with its chief digital and technology officer.
James Reeve, who has been deputy director of digital delivery at the DfE since 2018, has taken on the role for six months while the department looks for someone to fill it long term.
In a departmental blogpost he said the new role will involve leading on digital across the department, setting up multi-disciplinary teams in each area of work, supporting team leads in delivering digital services, and working across government on common problems.
The DfE is also considering other responsibilities including skills development and governance.
Reeve identified five workstreams for the department, taking in teaching the workforce, the quality of provision for teachers and school leaders, helping social workers to support families and children, supporting school administrators and providing services for the department’s digital teams.
“One of the things we’ve learned from the last year is that with so much going on across the department, we need to be much clearer about who is accountable for delivery,” he said. “So we’ve re-set and reorganised our work to remove any ambiguity – if a new problem comes along it’s easy to see which area of work it belongs to.”
