Devon County Council is planning to run trials of smart gullies under a programme to build resilience against flooding in the county.
It has outlined the intention to run a trial of gully sensor technology on roads from the autumn of this year until spring 2025.
Its highways and flood and coastal risk management teams are working on the project and have approached the industry for support.
The market notice says it wishes to see if data from the sensors, which the council aims to collect over two winters, can be used to inform gulley clearing schedules and work as a warning system for flooding.
The trial will be run in four location in rural and urban areas, as part of the Devon Resilience Innovation Project, which is aimed at identifying alternatives to traditional flood defences that are not appropriate for their areas or cost-effective. It involves linking flood resilience measures to local spatial planning policy to protect further communities at risk.
Funding has been made available through the Government’s Flood and Coastal Risk Innovation Programme.
