Derbyshire County Council has begun to use an AI based language translation service to provide automated translations of its documents, web pages and service communications.

Its director of digital, Leonardo Tantari, said on LinkedIn that that the service is hosted on the AWS Simply Translate platform and covers 75 languages.

He said it will provide benefits in terms of accessibility to council information for non-native English speakers, time savings and cost efficiencies.

It reflects a need identified in the 2021 Census that showed English is not the main language of 8.9% of the residents of Derbyshire – around 71,500 people.

This initiative aligns with our strategic objectives to promote a thriving community, strengthen our One Council Strategy,” Tantari said. “By transforming internal processes and driving operational efficiency, we are fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the council.

“We are excited about the potential of this service to improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of our services.”
