The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has begun to use a new intranet following a six-month redevelopment programme.

Its service owner for employee experience, Julia Crompton, said it now has a modern look with a clearer news section, a new events calendar, an option to bookmark favourite pages, and that key information, initially related to HR, is easier to find.

In addition, the name has been changed from Digital Workspace to The Intranet, and that in one week the number of views increased by 10% to a new high of 300,000.

In a blogpost on the intranet’s development, Crompton said: “Discovery work around staff communities and networks in DBT is underway, and we are piloting events publication in the new format. A more personalised experience for users is being explored.

Fit for purpose

“The future is very exciting - the work is never finished, but we are well on the way to a fit for purpose intranet that is engaging, informative and enables collaboration and knowledge for all DBT colleagues.”

The changes have come in response to a discovery that highlighted a need to focus on three areas related to HR information: making it easier to find policies and guidance; helping line managers and joiners feel confident in taking action; and helping colleagues use HR policies and guidance without the HR team’s support.
