The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Digital, Data and Technology Service (DDTS) has signed Scisys to provide the software and services for its planned Earth Observation (EO) Data Service.
It will make raw satellite EO data available for analysis as a range of products.
The company said the solution for the service conforms to Open Geospatial Consortium standards and will enable DDTS to produce analysis-ready data for the department and its agencies.
The work is being delivered as part of a call-off contract worth £2.2 million overall, and the service is currently in beta and scheduled for full implementation later this year.
Until now, anyone wanting to access EO data had to source, download, store and process it to make it analysis-ready. The Defra EO Service will automate this process and provide a web portal with open APIs to facilitate easier access and sharing.
It should also provide a consistent view of the data through the portal.
Gesche Schmid, head of data innovation at DDTS, said: “The EO Data Service will allow Defra to easily, quickly and cost-effectively monitor environmental change over time and will help to transform the delivery of many Defra group services. It will play a key role in supporting our 25-year environment plan, future farming, water and other related activities.”
