Defra plans for new Data Services Platform

26/08/21

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is planning to develop a new version of its Data Services Platform.

Named DSP3, it will replace the second version, the contract for which ends in 2023, and provide capabilities including data management services, digital services including those on environment.data.gov.uk, a range of application and service management. The latter will take in functions such as business continuity and disaster recovery, cyber security, data governance, knowledge management and software development.

Defra has published a prior information notice on the project, pointing to plans for a contract worth around £10 million.

The DSP  was first established in 2009, makes environmental data from across Defra group available to a wide range of users, including the public for some datasets, and has provided services for sharing and linking data along with a metadata catalogue.

According to the prospectus for the procurement, the platform had over 1.8 billion API calls in 2020, with data used in a large number of real time, mission critical services.
