The Department for Food, the Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) has formed a partnership with a group of technology suppliers to promote ICT sustainability.
Named the Joint Sustainable ICT Group, it involves Defra’s Digital, Data and Technology Services (DDTS) and companies including Dell, Atos, Vodafone, IBM, Capgemini, Ark, HPE, Tier 1, Xerox and DXC.
Writing in a Defra Digital blogpost, the department’s sustainability lead Mattie Yeta says the group is looking to collect, share and promote best practice in the field for the full supply chain.
“As a group of sustainable ICT experts and globally leading organisations, we recognise that in order to be successful, our innovative approach requires viewing situations from outside our existing organisational lenses and being user and problem-centric,” Yeta says.
In December Defra published a Sustainable Technology Strategy for government taking in a number of requirements for central government departments and agencies, including rolling programmes of initiatives on ICT sustainability, risks and issues.
Last month its Greening Government ICT report indicated that the average energy footprint in Whitehall increase slightly in 2017-18, reversing a steady reduction since 2013.
