The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has set up a governance framework for the safe internal use of AI technologies.
Senior data scientist Sarah Livermore said the framework has been in place since the beginning of the year and is currently subject to iteration to reflect lessons from its early use and changes in the market.
She said in a blogpost that it covers the development of DBT’s in-house mathematical modelling, plus any use of third party tools including generative AI. It requires that ethical issues have been adequately considered, and that any work has a sound legal basis.
It is based on the DBT’s information risk assurance processes and has been developed with the department’s experts in areas such as cyber security and data protection, and with support from the Alan Turing Institute.
“We recognise that as a government department, we must meet a very high standard for trustworthiness by being fair, accurate and impartial,” Livermore said. “It is really important that we apply those values to any AI driven systems we build.”
