Transport for London (TfL) has said a “routine data upload” was the cause of hundred of black cab drivers receiving incorrect fines last week.

It has issued a statement after having cancelled the penalty charges for drivers entering the city’s congestion charge area and ultra low emission zone.

Black cabs are exempt from the relevant fees for both.

According to a report by the BBC, the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association said had complained about the charges.

In response, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are cancelling the penalty charge notices and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The agency added that the problem was caused by an error with a routine data upload, and it has spoken to taxi trade representatives to assure them that penalty charge notices will be cancelled without the need for further action.

The BBC report added that another batch of penalties had to be cancelled last month and was believed to be the result of the recent cyber attack on TfL.
