The University of Manchester has said it expects some data has been copied from its systems after a cyber attack.
Its secretary and chief operating officer Patrick Hackett has issued a statement acknowledging the attack, saying it is working to understand what data has been accessed but it believes it likely that some has been copied, and that it is working with external experts to prevent any further unauthorised access.
“As you would expect, we are also working with the relevant authorities, including the Information Commissioner’s Office, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the National Crime Agency and other regulatory bodies,” Hackett said.
“We know this will cause concern to members of our community and we are very sorry for this.
“Our priority is to resolve this issue and provide information to those affected as soon as we are able to, and we are focusing all available resources.”
It warned users of its systems to be suspicious of phishing emails.
