Croydon Council and its partners are planning the development of a freight traffic control platform to manage the movements of construction traffic.

Along with technology provider Grid Smarter Cities and electric vehicle infrastructure business EB Charging, the council has won £485,000 for the project from the Government’s innovation agency Innovate UK.

The money will support the development and pilot of an alpha stage product by March of next year.

Councillor Stuart King, Croydon’s cabinet lead for environment and transport, said: “This is an innovative project that will help us to monitor, manage and regulate HGV journeys across Croydon.

“This will help us try and make sure deliveries arrive not only in a timely manner, but even more importantly that the journeys are as safe and green as possible.”

Grid Smarter Cities said the platform will be based on its Kerb intelligent kerbside management solution, the prototype of which was developed with support from a previous round of Innovate UK funding.

It provides for the digital control of kerbsides, allowing drivers to park on restricted stretches for fixed periods, and real time management of the road network.

The company said the new platform will be aimed at easing the movements of commercial operators when heading into and around construction sites, while reducing congestion and the environmental impact of heavy goods vehicles.
