Coventry City Council is planning to roll out a new traffic signal control system from Siemens Mobility.
It has installed the new Plus+ system at an intersection on the B4106, one of the main routes into the city, and is contracted with the company to extend its use to other sites under a £1.45 million contract.
The installation is a complete refurbishment of a MOVA (microprocessor optimised vehicle actuation) controlled intersection. The system will be monitored by the council’s urban traffic control and Stratos traffic management systems.
The configuration work was carried out off-site in factory controlled conditions, which reduced the amount of site time needed for the installation.
The system has dedicated failsafe signal heads and pedestrian indicators, along with new smart loop modules to ensure it is tolerant of damage to individual components and cables. This is aimed at ensuring higher intersection availability and reduced disruption to road users.

“We are therefore excited to be the first UK authority to install Plus+, which will shape and change the way we work and install future schemes.”
The initiative is part of Transport for West Midlands’ Key Route Network programme.
