HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has set up a senior data governance panel to support the use of data created in the justice system of England and Wales.
It will consist of five senior officials each from HMCTS and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), five senior judges and at least five independent experts.
The latter group will have expertise in areas such as open data, social research and emerging technologies such as machine learning.
HMCTS said the group will provide advice and guidance on issues referred to it, with a focus on the principles of open justice, independence of the judiciary, the rule of law and maintaining public confidence in the justice system.
It will also be aimed at helping the judiciary, HMCTS and MoJ to make the best possible use of data to improve public services, including through the use and re-use of data.
