Shetland Islands Council selects SecurEnvoy 2FA for secure remote access
Shetland Islands Council has chosen SecurAccess from tokenless security solutions specialist SecurEnvoy to bring remote access by staff to its corporate network up to the security standards required by connection to the Public Services Network (PSN). A strong two-factor authentication (2FA) solution was required, and the new software enables secure logins without requiring dedicated tokens. The council has around 2,200 staff. SecurAccess makes use of users' smartphones as security keys instead of supplying additional physical tokens. It allows users to receive dynamically generated passcodes, for example via SMS, which they then enter in addition to a username and password in order to authenticate themselves. By entering this code users authenticate themselves when remotely accessing the authority's network. The soft token app from SecurEnvoy works in a similar and straightforward way. Users simply install the application on their smartphone or tablet and can use this to obtain a QR code. This is then scanned using a webcam on their computer or mobile device, thereby allowing the app to transmit information that unequivocally establishes the identity of the employee.

Edge Hill University picks Capita for library platform
Edge Hill University has picked Capita to deliver a cloud-based library services platform allowing students to search and access physical and electronic resources including resources available through Proquest's Summon Service from a single search box on their mobiles, tablets and computers. The solution will also be integrated with the university's existing virtual learning environment to provide seamless access to library information, the company says. The university will also be using Capita's Soprano application, which allows staff to help students on the spot, anywhere in the library or on campus, using tablet devices. Using Soprano, staff can issue and return items, make reservations, and answer enquiries without being stuck behind the enquiries desk. Staff can also use the solution to perform circulation and stock management tasks.

NetClean helps Home Office implement child abuse image database
Intelligence solutions specialist NetClean has announced that it has successfully collaborated with its partners, Hubstream and L-3 ASA, to implement the first phase of the UK's national Child Abuse Image Database (CAID). The CAID creates a central repository for consolidating data in cases of child sexual abuse material. The new service will enable crime units to share data, information and leads as part of the fight to protect children from exploitation. The selection was made through the UK Government's G-Cloud framework and the service will be rolled out over a two-year timeframe to 46 police forces and law enforcement agencies across the UK. NetClean's Analyze Collaboration Server will act as a central hub where files are stored and easily extracted for new investigations. The CAID service enables law enforcement agencies to search content on seized devices for child abuse images and to quickly differentiate between new and existing material, allowing them to focus resources accordingly. The database will also provide law enforcement agencies within the secure national police infrastructure with access to accurate information on child exploitation cases so that they can share data and identify patterns in information. Having access to a CAID will also enable greater collaboration between local, national and international crime units, the company says.
