NHS South, Central & West Commissioning Support Unit (SCW) is to take responsibility for the Wiltshire Child Health Information Service (CHIS) from April 2022.

It will also retain the CHIS for Bath and North East Somerset, Gloucestershire and Swindon after winning the tender for a four-year contract with NHS England and NHS Improvement (South-West).

The deal involves SCW creating a single CHIS digital service for the region so that all child health data is managed safely and securely in one place.

It is aimed at ensuring that all children aged 0-19 years in the relevant areas continue to have an accurate immunisation and screening record to support clinical interventions.

The SCW team will perform the role of ensuring that children receive appointment invitations and reminders, in the same way as they do now, at the correct age for NHS immunisation and national health screening programmes. Health and care professionals will have access to the information in a format everyone can understand through an interoperable solution.

Quick transfer

Sue Trinder, director of CHIS said: “We are delighted to extend the work we currently deliver in Bath and North-East Somerset, Gloucestershire and Swindon to Wiltshire. Our focus now is to ensure a quick and seamless transfer for Wiltshire and to continue driving improvements which impact on the care and welfare of the children in the area.”

SCW is an NHS support service that supports health and social care organisations.

CHIS is an NHS commissioned service responsible for collating data from healthcare professionals for children aged 0-19 into a single child health record. The data recorded in CHIS is provided by midwives, health visitors, school nurses and GPs.

Earlier this year SCW completed the implementation of a CHIS project for Cheshire and Merseyside.
