Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has named Magentus as preferred supplier of a new laboratory information management system (LIMS) for the Cheshire and Merseyside Diagnostics service.

The company has been named as the preference to deliver a LIMS solution to five pathology laboratories under an £11.5 million contract.

It said this will enable the safe sharing of test results across the region, reducing the need for retesting and making it possible to carry out complex tests more quickly.

Along with the Countess of Chester, the solution will be used by hospital trusts for Wirral University, Warrington and Halton, Mersey and West Lancashire, and Liverpool Clinical Laboratories, which is part of Liverpool University Hospitals Trust.

It will support approximately 2,000 staff in delivering as many as 53 million pathology tests per year.

Future proofing

Dr Lisa Bailey, clinical lead at the Cheshire and Merseyside Pathology Network, said: “The network-wide Cheshire and Merseyside LIMS will provide a resilient, future proof system that will allow standardised clinical and working practices across the Cheshire and Merseyside Pathology Network.

“It will improve patient safety by utilising one clinical record and allowing access of patient’s results across the Cheshire and Merseyside Pathology Network to clinicians and laboratory staff. This will reduce unwarranted variation, improve the turnaround time of the tests, reduce repeat testing and support demand management of requesting.”

Christine Kelly, programme director for LIMS, commented: “Staff across all Cheshire and Merseyside Pathology Network labs will be involved in the design and implementation of the new solution. Current lab systems are up to 30 years old and in desperate need of modernisation to meet current standards.”
