Cherwell District Council has launched a local version of the Street Tag mobile app to encourage people to walk and cycle in a “virtual treasure hunt”.
It has designed a game that makes use of GPS technology, interactive map guides and virtual tags place on popular walking routes and in areas with green space.
Players score points by logging in then finding the correct locations, such as libraries and leisure centres, to within 40 metres.
They can play as individuals or families with teams of up to six. Families signing up can join a league and there are plans for an inter-school league to get underway in the autumn.
Councillor George Reynolds, Cherwell’s lead member for leisure and sport, said: “By working with StreetTag, Cherwell is helping residents to improve their wellbeing by providing a fun and easy way to increase their activity levels.
“Anyone with access to a smartphone can get involved and with the extra competitive element, where points mean prizes, we hope this will become a popular activity for a wide variety of people all year round.”
