The Charity Commission has announced that its new digital account for charities will go live on 31 July.

The regulator for the sector said the My Charity Commission Account will provide a ‘front door’ to its digital services, that most charities have now been invited to sign up, and that it will invite others to do so when the service is live.

Its existing service will be taken out of action, and charities that are currently part-way through filing their accounts have been advised to complete the process by 28 July. Those that do not will have to start again through the new My Charity Commission account.

All annual returns for next year will be submitted through the new service.

The roll out has begun with all of the commission’s named contacts and over the next few months will be extended to all individual trustees. The commision said this will facilitate a more direct relationship to ensure trustees are supported well in running their charities, and will provide stronger data security.

Important milestone

Nick Baker, chief operating officer of the Charity Commission, said: “There is a lot of work still for us to do before we meet our long term ambition for a new, direct form of online communication between the commission and each and every charity trustee.

“But the end of this month marks an important milestone in the development of My Charity Commission Account, enabling charities to access the new service for the first time. I call on all charities to act quickly when they receive an onboarding invitation from the commission.”
