Crown Commercial Service provides a push for public authorities to include monitoring technology in their fleet management
The Crown Commercial Service (CCS) has launched a vehicle telematics agreement, providing a boost for the technology's take-up among public sector organisations.
It claimed that the move will provide the potential for buying organisations to save £3 for every £1 they invest, by improving fuel consumption, driver behaviour and safety.
Telematics includes the use of onboard instruments, satellite navigation and data to give drivers and fleet managers a clear picture of a vehicle's performance.
The procurement agreement has been structured in a single lot with standard terms and conditions and includes 11 suppliers, all of them SMEs. They provide a range of products including vehicle cameras, trackers, fuel monitors and business intelligence tools.
CCS said it has been developed with police, ambulance, local and central government input, and can help fleet managers reduce the whole life cost of vehicles.
Among the benefits it claimed were the potential reduction of insurance premiums, a better understanding of driver behaviour to improve safety and reduce emissions, better management of a fleet, and supporting whole life cost analysis. The latter comes from tracking servicing, maintenance and repair costs on vehicles.
