Calderdale Council has said it is setting up a virtual volunteering hub as part of its response to the spread of coronavirus.

It will be used in managing volunteers to ensure their support is targeted where it is most needed, working with the council’s voluntary and community partners.

The move is part of a 10-point plan for its core response to the virus and is at the centre of co-ordinating the community response.

The hub will include a directory of local groups that can offer support, with details of what they can provide, and a list of areas that need additional volunteers to keep priority services such as foodbanks open. It will be able to match offers of help to where it is needed.

A dedicated email address has also been set up to record all offers of volunteering.

Leader of Calderdale Council Tim Swift said: “It’s no surprise to me that so many people have been in touch to ask how they can help. It’s the same spirit that we see during the floods and it makes me proud. Our communities always rally round in times of need; it’s what makes this place so distinctive.”
