Buckinghamshire Council obtained broadband connectivity for key sites in rural areas with a hybrid solution that includes low Earth orbit satellite technology.
IT and business consultancy CGI said it has completed the delivery of the solution to village halls in poorly connected rural areas, along with a free-to-use public wireless service, working in collaboration with network technologies specialist Onwave.
It said the satellite approach provides low latency and secure connectivity, and is more cost-effective for some areas than laying physical cables underground.
Cllr Martin Tett, leader of the council and digital portfolio holde, said: “Digital connectivity is central not only to the prosperity of Buckinghamshire as we look forward to the future, but also to the quality of life of most of our residents.
“CGI has partnered with us to develop a well thought out and innovative approach to supporting improved connectivity across our region, particularly in those communities that have previously proven hard to reach.”
