NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has begun work with BT on a digital solution to support its blood donor network.
They currently have the solution in test phase with plans to begin the delivery to the organisation’s 50 mobile teams and 23 donation centres next year.
While NHSBT’s appointment system and donor database are digital, the frontline processes for blood donation sessions are largely supported by paper records. A spokesperson for BT said the new solution will enable NHSBT to begin to digitise key aspect of the process and provide a platform for further developments.
The company will provide an end-to-end service that can be managed remotely over the EE 4G network. It will also involve the provision of devices including rugged hand-held scanners to capture data on donors, tablet computers and laptops to log information, and bespoke cabinets to improve accessibility in the mobile units.
Staff will be able to track information on blood donor bookings and records, and the all the data will be stored on a cloud based BT platform updated in real time.
Many benefits
David Suttie, accountable executive at NHSBT, said: “There will be many benefits to the new technology solution. It will allow us to collect IT data more effectively, help donors move through the process quicker and reduce paperwork.
“This will be a positive outcome for our blood donation service.”
The solution is being provided under a three-year contract with the possibility for an extension in the future.
