British Transport Police (BTP) is planning to develop a mobile app and platform to help people – especially women and girls – report any incidents on the rail network.

It has published a notice looking for support in the design and development of the system, saying it wants to create a user-friendly tool for safer journeys on the transport network.

This comes from the increasingly high priority given to protecting women and girls and is being funded under the Home Office’s Safer Streets programme.

The notice says that consultation with stakeholders – including charities and the rail industry – has identified the need for better methods of reporting relevant offices. The app and platform will be developed to encourage the reporting of incidents, provide access to guidance, support and signpost users to charities and other agencies.

This will involve integration with BTP’s existing text service and the Single Online Home crime reporting service, and include geo-technology capabilities.

BTP is aiming to make the product available by the end of March 2022.
