Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has offered prizes from a draw for local people who create an online account for its services.

It said that anyone doing so before 11 February is eligible, with the competition winner to have a 50% reduction on next year’s council tax and the runner-up to receive a year’s membership at a local leisure centre.

The council said the move is part of its drive to get residents using online services wherever possible.

Cllr Stephen Sweeney, Newcastle-under-Lyme’s deputy leader, said: “Thousands of our residents are already using our services digitally and we want to encourage more people to follow that route.

“By going online people will receive their bills faster than by post and have better accessibility to all our services, while using less paper helps reduce the council’s carbon footprint and saves money.”

He added that the council will continue to provide phone support for people who are not comfortable with using technology.
