Birmingham City Council is in the process of decommissioning and refurbishing several thousand digital devices for re-use in local communities.
This follows a pilot for the Birmingham Device Bank in which over 600 devices were distributed to 85 charities across the city.
The scheme is currently handling laptops with power adaptors and desktops with monitors, keyboards and mice, all of which are refurbished and supplied to charities and community groups without operating systems installed.
The council is receiving applications from organisations that can distribute the devices to people who are currently digitally excluded.
Fantastic opportunity
Councillor Jayne Francis, cabinet member for digital, culture, heritage and tourism, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for charities and community groups who are helping local people without digital access. With too many families already struggling to heat their homes and put food on the table, digital access can be completely out of reach even though it is so important.
“With this support, these organisations can help citizens build digital skills and confidence and assist them in applying for jobs and benefits they are entitled to.”
